FAYETTE COUNTY, W. Va. — Paula McClung, a Faith Community Nurse serving Fayette County, recently led an advance directive education program aimed at helping community members better understand their health care choices and plan for the future.
The program focused on advance directives, including the importance of documenting health care wishes and designating decision‑makers ahead of a medical crisis. Faith Community Nursing programs often provide trusted, accessible health education in familiar settings, helping bridge gaps in health literacy and access to care.
McClung recently completed the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing course through the West Virginia University School of Nursing, strengthening her ability to provide evidence‑based health education, spiritual care, and community outreach. The training supports nurses who work within faith communities to promote wellness, prevention, and informed decision‑making.
“I am excited to see how the community responds,” McClung said. “There is a real opportunity to continue offering education and support that meets people where they are.”

“Faith Community Nursing initiatives such as this one play an important role in empowering individuals and families to engage in meaningful conversations about health, values, and future care preferences,” said Dr. Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the WVU School of Nursing.
Funding for McClung’s training and ongoing support is provided by The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, whose investment helps expand access to faith‑based health education and resources across the region.
