Keyser Campus nursing students share tips on hypertension through social media campaign

KEYSER, W. Va. — WVU School of Nursing students enrolled in NSG 411 at the Keyser Campus had an opportunity to educate the community about hypertension during a social media campaign last fall.

Dr. Kasey Beckman-Sirk led the effort, encouraging senior students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to connect with users on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.

“The social media campaign was a modern and engaging way to educate the community about hypertension,” Beckman-Sirk said. “The students enjoyed working together and reported that they developed skills such as teamwork, communication, and professionalism while creating their projects.”

Sam Nichols, multimedia specialist, coordinated the effort with the students, offering guidance on planning, recording, and sharing the videos across the platforms.

“It was a pleasure working with Kasey and her students for this social media campaign,” Nichols said. “I was so surprised by how widely the videos were shared online. Thousands of people watched these student-made videos that were both informative and engaging.”

He added, “The students should be proud of what they accomplished, and I want to thank everyone for their time and commitment to the campaign.”

Beckman-Sirk said the students were surprised by the level of engagement they achieved in their videos and were pleased that it had such a positive impact on the community.

“I am very proud of the students and their dedication to this initiative,” she said.

Dr. April Shapiro, Keyser Campus Chair, applauded the project and said, “I think this was a very innovative idea to expand the reach of community teaching.”
