MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The WVU School of Nursing has teamed up with Suncrest United Methodist Church to launch a community initiative aimed at supporting vulnerable populations.
Together, they are building and stocking “Blessing Boxes,” which are supply boxes placed in accessible community settings to provide free food and hygiene items to those in need.
Two blessing boxes have already been installed at Timberline Apartments and Marjorie Gardens, offering residents convenient access to essential supplies. The project seeks to address food insecurity and promote health equity by ensuring that individuals and families have access to non-perishable food and hygiene products.
Community members are encouraged to contribute by donating items such as canned goods, toiletries, and other essentials. Donations can be made through the project’s Amazon Wish List.

“This initiative reflects our commitment to meeting people where they are and addressing basic needs that impact health and well-being,” said Dr. Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at the WVU School of Nursing. “By partnering with local organizations, we can make a tangible difference in our community.”
Abigale Mullings, a graduate student in the WVU School of Public Health, said food insecurity is a growing concern.
“Projects like this help bridge gaps for families who might otherwise go without,” Mullings said. “It’s inspiring to see the community come together to support one another.”
For Zack Hostutler, an AmeriCorps VISTA member working on the project, the Blessing Boxes are all about “dignity and accessibility.”
“Anyone can take what they need or give what they can, and that sense of shared responsibility strengthens our community,” Hostutler said.
Rev. Tim Hollaran completed the installation on both boxes.
“You can't serve God apart from serving the community,” Hollaran said. “Inasmuch as we do something for someone in need, we are doing it for God.”
