Growing Professionally through PhD Program
What made you consider nursing as a career?
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 9 years old. For the next 10 years, I watched her fight her disease with grace and resilience. My mom’s cancer journey shaped my childhood, my career, and who I am today.
Did you have an ah-ha moment about wanting to become a nurse?
My mom passed away when I was a freshman in college. During this time, I was working to be admitted into the Nursing Department at Waynesburg University. My mom’s passing reinforced my decision to become a nurse and ignited a deeper passion for my pursuit.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
I chose WVU School of Nursing because I felt peace about my decision. During my interview, the faculty members were warm and welcoming. From this interview, I knew that WVU would provide a nurturing and supportive environment for my education.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
The faculty in the PhD program challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, and they provide opportunities for professional development. During my time at WVU, I was able to publish a journal article, attend conferences, and present my work via podium and poster presentations. I was also named a 2018-2020 Jonas Nurse Leader Scholar and received $20,000 in funding. All my accomplishments would not have been possible without the mentorship I was receiving from the WVU faculty members!
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
One piece of advice I would give my freshman self is to not underestimate your own potential. Your test scores, grades, and GPA do not define you or your potential as a person.
How has your WVU SON education helped you in your career?
My education at WVU has shaped how I see the nursing discipline. It has provided me with knowledge, skills, and opportunities to grow professionally as a nurse scientist.
Could you tell me more about your career?
I began my nursing career in the hospital setting working primarily on medical surgical and cardiac units. Once I earned my master’s degree, I transitioned into academia. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Waynesburg University.
