Making a Difference during Difficult Moments
What made you consider nursing as a career?
Venturing into a career in the health field has always been my aspiration. This desire certainly came from the opportunity I had as a little girl to take care of my dying aunt. Assisting others on their road to recovery, and bringing joy, and wellness in people lives at times when they need it the most has always been gratifying to me.
Did you have an ah-ha moment about wanting to become a nurse?
My ah-ha moment about wanting to become a nurse is realizing that I have the power to make a difference in someone's life, even if it's just by making them laugh or holding their hand during a difficult moment. As stated by the American poet Maya Angelou, “They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.”
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
I chose West Virginia University School of Nursing instead of any other universities to pursue my doctorate degree in Nursing because of its comprehensive curriculum, the nurturing environment it provides to its students, and the supportive faculty and staff.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
There were multiple positive experiences at the SON including edifying group discussions with fellow students and faculty, running the journal club, and attending very informative seminars.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
The advice I will give to my freshman self will be: To embrace the beauty of lifelong learning as Nursing is a field that never stops evolving. To seek out opportunities for growth, to challenge the status quo, and never be afraid to ask questions. Education in any form can have its ups and downs, but it’s always worth it; it’s my ticket to a brighter tomorrow. To savor the journey; amidst the hustle and bustle, to remember to take a step back and appreciate the little moments, the smiles of gratitude, the victories, and even the unexpected friendships that blossom amidst the chaos. These are the moments that will fill my heart with a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Most importantly, to remember to take care of myself. It's easy to get caught up in the chaos of work and forget about my own well-being. To find time to relax, recharge, and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. And to not be afraid to ask for help when I need it as no one becomes successful without a support system to lift one up and to make the journey a little bit easier.
