Beckley nursing seniors participate in interprofessional learning event

WVU School of Nursing Beckley Campus seniors recently teamed up with medical students for an interprofessional learning event at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Hosted March 8, the event welcomed 16 nursing seniors to team up with medical students from the WVSOM. The student teams rotated through four stations — each station offered a different medical simulation scenario, including an obstetric case, a breast cancer case, an anaphylaxis, and a mental health case. Some stations involved high fidelity mannequins as the patient, while other stations had standardized patients (live actors).

“The event is essential in developing assessment skills, communication skills, decision making skills and collaborative coordination of care amongst team members responsible for different roles in the care of the patient,” said Mindy Harris, an assistant professor who has helped coordinate the IPE event since 2018.

“This event allows students to hone their leadership skills, and through the process of collaborative teamwork, the students bolster confidence in their knowledge base and in their ability to apply that knowledge to actual scenarios and patients.”

In addition to Harris, Cynthia Clark, Peggy Lambert-Fink, Kelly Morton and Campus Chair Hillary Parcell also attended the event.
