Following the devastating floods that have impacted southern West Virginia, two nursing schools have come together to offer their support. The West Virginia University School of Nursing and Bluefield State University School of Nursing have partnered to provide essential supplies to families who lost everything in the disaster.
“Our students are not only learning about nursing in the classroom, but they’re also seeing firsthand what it means to care for a community in crisis,” said Sandy Wynn, Director of the Bluefield State University School of Nursing, who has stepped up as the leader of this collaborative initiative. “This is what nursing is all about—compassion, action, and service.”
Students and faculty from both schools have been collecting and delivering critical items such as hygiene kits, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, blankets, and medical essentials. With many residents displaced and struggling to access basic necessities, these donations have provided a lifeline.
“When we saw the images and heard the stories coming out of southern West Virginia, we knew we had to do something,” said Dr. Angel Smothers, Associate Dean for Community Engagement at WVU School of Nursing. “As nurses, we are called to serve, and this partnership with Bluefield State allows us to make a real impact for people who need help right now.”
As recovery efforts continue, both schools remain committed to supporting southern West Virginia communities in the months ahead. Through ongoing donation drives and community outreach, WVU and Bluefield State’s nursing students and faculty are proving that, even in the face of disaster, the spirit of care and service remains stronger than ever.
“This partnership shows the power of collaboration,” Smothers added. “By working together, we can do more than just respond to the immediate crisis — we can help rebuild hope.”
