WVU School of Nursing recognizes Dr. Mary Jane Smith for more than 43 years of service in education

Dr. Mary Jane Smith, PhD, RN, FAAN, has been working with the WVU School of Nursing since the fall of 1981 — nearly 44 years.

“I had good teachers as mentors and decided I wanted to become a teacher of nursing,” Dr. Smith said of her decision to become a professor.

During her time at the WVU School of Nursing, Dr. Smith has served as a graduate faculty member, as Associate Dean of Graduate Programs, Chair of Adult Health, and currently as Director of Special Projects.

For Dr. Smith, the most rewarding part of being an educator is “guiding graduate students as they grow and develop to become practitioners and scholars of nursing.”

“Dr. Smith’s tenure with the School of Nursing certainly deserves to be recognized,” said Dr. Tara Hulsey, Dean and E. Jane Martin Endowed Professor. “We are so grateful for the nearly 44-year commitment she has made to educating, shaping, and leading our nursing students, and for the numerous leadership roles she has held within our school.”

Dr. Smith is also committed to supporting the legacies of Drs. Lorita D. Jenab and Judy C. Kandzari by serving as the chair of the committee for each of their respective lectureships.
