The Service-Learning Faculty Advisory Committee, responsible for providing guidance on academic community engagement at WVU, has recently expanded academic offerings with the approval of DENT 767: Rural Community Dentistry Experience and NSG 441: Nursing in Complex Community Systems.
The approval of the service learning designated courses highlights the University’s dedication to preparing students for successful careers while nurturing their commitment to service, civic engagement and community well-being.
As WVU expands its service-learning offerings, students can look forward to transformative learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom, empowering them to become well-rounded professionals ready to make a difference in their communities.
DENT 767, taught by Dr. Valerie N. Perrine, aims to deepen students’ understanding of rural and primary care in the field of dentistry. Over the course of six weeks, students will gain hands-on experience at a rural dental office in West Virginia. Working closely with experienced dental preceptors, they will have the opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios, from patient care to practice management.
This comprehensive program also includes visits to other dental offices, supply houses, hospitals and community agencies, enabling students to grasp the entirety of skills and knowledge required for successful dental practice. Reflective journaling will further enhance their learning by encouraging critical thinking and self-reflection.
In NSG 441, Angel Smothers, DNP, will guide students through a comprehensive exploration of community health nursing. This course combines theoretical instruction with clinical experiences, allowing students to develop practical skills in promoting health and preventing disease across diverse populations. By immersing themselves in community-based healthcare delivery, students will gain a deep understanding of the complexities inherent in community health systems. The course culminates in a capstone project, where students will address an identified community health need.
