April Shapiro, PhD, RN, will serve as the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) chairperson for West Virginia University’s (WVU) School of Nursing at Potomac State College in Keyser, WV.
WVCTSI and the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center are pleased to welcome Uwe Staub, Ph.D., chief operating officer with Epigenomics, for a special seminar on November 14. Dr. Staub will present, “From the Idea to a Final Product –Translating Targeted Bisulfite Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) on Liquid biopsies into Product on the Market.”
Prescription medications, including antidepressants and pain medications, can have various side effects and risks, and a West Virginia University researcher is examining whether patients understand the risks associated with driving. Robin Pollini, Associate Director of the WVU School of Public Health’s Injury Control Research Center, led a study on driver awareness of the potential effects of prescription medications.
Several West Virginia University and community groups are joining efforts to discuss the Morgantown area’s approach to combatting the opioid epidemic. The WVU School of Public Health, Milan Puskar Health Right, the Monongalia County Health Department, WVU Collegiate Recovery Program, and WVU Student Government Association will host a November 16 community screening of the Netflix original short documentary “Heroin(e),” followed by a moderated panel discussion and audience Q&A. West Virginia Public Broadcasting is supporting the event.
March of Dimes Graduate Nursing Scholarship
Pediatric physician J. Philip Saul, M.D., will be the special guest at an open forum for Health Sciences and WVU Medicine faculty, staff and students at noon on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Okey Patteson Auditorium of the WVU Health Sciences Center. The topic will be, "WVU Medicine Children’s and the Health of West Virginia."

SHAPE (Student Healthcare Alliance for Promoting Equality), along with the WVU Departments of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics and the Divisions of Internal Medicine and Plastic Surgery are sponsoring a week-long lecture series in the Health Sciences Center from October 23 - 27 focusing on LGBTQ health.
A lunchtime panel discussion on veterans' issues will be held at WVU Oct. 12, moderated by moderated by Dr. Sandra "Sam" Cotton of the WVU School of Nursing. The discussion starts at 12 noon in the Fukushima Auditorium at the Health Sciences Center.
