Why do you want to become a nurse?
Ever since I was a little girl, I have always dreamed of having a career where I could help people and make a difference in their lives. My older sister, Abigail Jeffers, has been one of my biggest inspirations in choosing nursing. She graduated from the WVU School of Nursing in May of 2024 and is now a pediatric nurse at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Growing up and watching her go through nursing school and become the nurse she is today showed me how special and rewarding this career can be. I have always looked up to her, and seeing the impact she has on her patients made me even more certain that nursing was what I wanted to do.
Why did you want to become an ambassador?
I wanted to become a Nursing Ambassador because I genuinely love talking to people, meeting new people, and sharing my experiences with others. I am very proud to be a student at the WVU School of Nursing, so having the opportunity to represent the school and talk with prospective students and their families really excited me. I remember being in their position and having so many questions about what nursing school would actually be like. I would love to be someone they can relate to, ask questions, and feel comfortable talking with as they make such an important decision about their future.
What would you like prospective nursing students to know about the WVU School of Nursing?
I would want prospective students to know that although nursing school can be challenging, it is also so rewarding. At WVU, you are surrounded by people who understand what you are going through and truly want to see you succeed. Some of my favorite experiences have been getting hands-on experience in clinical and realizing that the things I have spent so much time learning in class are becoming skills I can actually use to care for my patients. The friendships I have made and the experiences I have had here have made WVU School of Nursing feel like a community rather than just a school.
What’s your best advice for high schoolers interested in nursing?
My biggest advice is to believe in yourself and not let the idea of nursing school intimidate you. It definitely takes hard work, but if nursing is something you are passionate about, the work is worth it. Take advantage of opportunities to learn about healthcare, talk to nurses and nursing students, ask lots of questions, and get involved whenever you can. You do not have to know everything before starting nursing school—that is what you are here to learn!
Anything else you’d like to add?
I am extremely grateful to be a part of the WVU School of Nursing and now have the opportunity to represent it as an ambassador. WVU has already given me so many experiences, friendships, and opportunities that have helped me grow into the person and future nurse I want to be. I am excited to share that experience with prospective students and hopefully help them feel as excited about beginning their nursing journey as I was. Let’s go, Mountaineers!
