Keyser nursing students host stress relieving activities to support wellness

WVU School of Nursing Keyser Campus students recently hosted a stress reduction activity as part of their NSG 411 on-campus clinical rotation. The event welcomed students, faculty and staff at the WVU Potomac State College Student Health Center.

“Stress levels can peak near the end of the semester and the holidays,” shared nursing instructor Dr. Diana Niland, who supported Bachelor of Science in Nursing seniors in the organization of the stress relieving event.

The activities involved screenings for depression and anxiety, preparing fruit and vegetable smoothies, and two- minute stress reduction techniques in an area where relaxing music was played and essential oils were diffused. Students who scored high on the screenings spoke to the Nurse Practitioner and were offered referrals to mental health services.

Senior nursing students Jenna Biggs, JJ Blank and Aiden Cooney helped Dr. Niland by designing activities at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of prevention. Then during the Nov. 16 event, senior students Taylor Grago, Emily Golden and Madison Fout implemented the plans.

"It is rewarding to be part of assisting the nursing students to take a concept they learn in lecture and apply it to serve the community in which they live, work and play,” Niland said. “They always have great ideas and offer unique perspectives."
