CHARLESTON, W. Va. — The West Virginia University School of Nursing hosted two interactive booths March 5 at the West Virginia Capitol, inviting WVU Day at the Legislature attendees to learn how to locate a heartbeat on the Student Auscultation Manikin (SAM) and to get some puppy love from Molly, the Beckley Campus therapy dog.
Charleston Campus faculty Jarena Kelly, Assistant Professor, and Melanie Whelan, RN to BSN Program Director, led the heartbeat demonstrations, offering visitors of all ages a free disposable stethoscope and a lesson in heartbeat location. Folks who visited the nursing table could also receive WVU Nursing pens, stickers and program information.
Beckley Campus Chair Hillary Parcell, lecturer Kelley Coleman and several nursing students offered a poster on the benefits of therapy dogs. Parcell also brought her therapy dog Molly, an Aussiedoodle who completed her training last May.
Hosted by WVU and WVU Extension, the free event welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy hands-on activities and learn more about educational opportunities across WVU. For questions about WVU Day at the Legislature, contact the WVU Extension Office of Communications.
