WVU School of Nursing hosts third annual Day Camp for high schoolers interested in nursing

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — The West Virginia University School of Nursing hosted its third annual Day Camp on Saturday, June 7, 2025, inviting high school students from West Virginia and beyond to explore the possibility of nursing as a career.

During the free one-day event, students experienced what it’s like to be a nursing student by participating in a mock lecture and escape room activity, hands-on learning opportunities at the West Virginia Simulation Training and Education for Patient Safety (STEPS) Center, and an information session.

“This event offers high school students a chance to see if nursing school might be a good fit for them,” said Director of Recruitment Phillip Engelkemier. “The event is hosted annually, so if you missed this year’s event, we invite you to join us next year or contact us to schedule a tour.”

New for 2025 was an alumni panel, which featured faculty members Dr. Tina Antill Keener and Amanda Kitzmiller, former SON Student Ambassadors Ateria Walker and Aiden Slusser, and two-time SON graduate Dr. Anitra Ellis. Attendees also had the opportunity for a Q&A session with current Ambassador Bella Bock.

Attendees received WVU School of Nursing gear, including a t-shirt and drawstring bag. A light breakfast and lunch were provided.
