WVU School of Nursing Keyser Campus ambassador selected as WV AHEC Scholar

KEYSER, W. Va. — Emily Kuykendall, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at the WVU School of Nursing Keyser Campus, has been selected as a WV Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Rural Community Health Scholar.

“Being accepted to the AHEC Rural Scholars Program means a great deal to me,” said Kuykendall, who also serves as a Nursing Ambassador for Keyser. “This opportunity will allow me to further understand how to serve my community and provide enriching opportunities to get hands-on experience in the communities that I will be serving in my nursing career.”

Kuykendall was selected for the two-year program, which supports health professions students interested in supplementing their education through experiences in rural and urban underserved communities, including didactic, clinical and community activities.

“Participating in the WV AHEC program will be wonderful to enrich Emily's experiences beyond the classroom and help her further understand the rural experience,” said Dr. April Shapiro, Keyser Campus Chair. “I know she will be such an asset to their program and the critical work they do, especially since her values fall right in alignment with their mission.”

Shapiro added, “Being an AHEC Scholar will also enhance Emily's understanding of the work she is doing in the Honors EXCEL program related to examining financial barriers rural students face coming to and persisting in college. It is wonderful to see her goals coming full circle!”
