Can you tell us more about your previous degree(s)?

My previous degree is a Bachelor of Science in Biology. After graduating, I became a middle school science and social studies teacher. While I enjoyed working with students and found teaching to be rewarding, I realized that a career in the classroom was not the right long-term fit for me.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in nursing?

I decided to pursue nursing because I wanted a career where I could directly support people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. That realization led me to pursue nursing as I could be actively involved in patient care on a daily basis, build relationships with patients and their families, and contribute to their well-being.

Why did you choose the WVU School of Nursing for your nursing education?

I chose the WVU School of Nursing Accelerated BSN program at Bridgeport because of its small class sizes, strong reputation for preparing graduates to enter nursing practice, and the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in an accelerated timeframe. The supportive learning environment and individualized attention from faculty made it the ideal program for me as I transitioned into a second career.

Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?

While there have been many memorable moments throughout the program, what stands out most to me is the close-knit community we built at the Bridgeport Campus. Because of the small class sizes, I developed strong friendships with my classmates, and we supported each other through every challenge. The professors were also supportive of us all. They were always approachable, genuinely invested in our success, and willing to provide guidance whenever we needed it.

Are there any obstacles you’ve been able to overcome in pursuit of your nursing degree?

One of the biggest obstacles I overcame was balancing the demands of an accelerated nursing program. The pace was fast, and there was always something to prepare for, whether it was exams, clinicals, simulations, or assignments. It required me to manage my time effectively and learn how to prioritize competing responsibilities in both my personal life and my education.

How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?

The WVU School of Nursing has prepared me well for the next chapter of my career. Through the program I’ve grown in my clinical judgment and critical thinking skills that are essential for nursing. The combination of classroom instruction, simulation, and diverse clinical experiences has given me a strong foundation as I begin my career. I know there is still so much to learn as a new graduate nurse, but I feel confident that WVU has given me the tools and foundation I need to continue growing and succeed in my nursing career.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I have accepted a position as a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) nurse at WVU Medicine Golisano Children's Hospital. I'm incredibly excited to begin my nursing career with the same organization that played such an important role in my education and helped shape me into the nurse I am today.

My time at the WVU School of Nursing has been incredibly rewarding, and it's truly hard to believe how quickly it has gone by. Throughout the program, I have been fortunate to learn alongside an amazing group of classmates while receiving unwavering support from the professors and staff at the Bridgeport campus. Their encouragement, guidance, and dedication have made a lasting impact on my nursing education, and I am grateful for the experiences and relationships I have built during my time at WVU.
