Can you tell us more about your previous degree(s)?

My previous degree is in Exercise Physiology from Fairmont State University. While I was there, I was a varsity football player and served as a team captain. I was originally on the pre-med track before deciding that nursing was the right path for me. My background in exercise physiology gave me a strong foundation in the sciences and prepared me well for the fast-paced ABSN program.

Why did you decide to pursue a career in nursing?

I always knew I wanted to work in the medical field, but I wasn't sure which profession was the best fit. After completing the WVSOM Green Coat Program, I realized that nursing was the path I wanted to pursue. The opportunity to care for patients while continuing to learn every day really stood out to me. Nursing is a profession that allows you to make a real difference in people's lives everyday, and that's what drew me to it.

Why did you choose the WVU School of Nursing for your nursing education?

The WVU School of Nursing has an outstanding reputation, which made choosing this program an easy decision. In addition, WVU's BS-to-BSN option is unique and provides an excellent opportunity for students who already have a bachelor's degree to transition into nursing. It was exactly the type of program I was looking for.

Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?

I have had so many positive experiences throughout my time in the program that it's hard to pick just one. Looking back, the best part of the program wasn't one specific clinical or lecture. It was the people. My classmates quickly became a great support system, and the faculty genuinely wanted us to succeed. We leaned on each other through long study sessions, difficult exams, and challenging clinical rotations, and everyone was always willing to help one another. Watching all of us grow from the first day of the program to graduation has been incredibly rewarding, and the friendships and memories we made are something I'll always be grateful for.

Are there any obstacles you’ve been able to overcome in pursuit of your nursing degree?

Due to a transcript issue, I was placed on the waitlist and wasn't officially accepted into the program until the week before classes began. It felt like I was starting behind everyone else from day one. On top of that, I was adjusting to a move and coping with the loss of my grandmother during the program. Although those challenges weren't easy, previous experiences in life have taught me how to face adversity and keep moving forward no matter what. Obstacles like these became opportunities for growth and helped me become stronger both personally and professionally.

How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?

WVU gave me the knowledge, clinical experience, and confidence I needed to begin my nursing career. The variety of clinical rotations allowed me to learn from experienced nurses in many different specialties while developing the critical thinking skills needed to care for patients. Just as importantly, the faculty challenged and supported me throughout the program, helping me become more prepared for the responsibilities that come with being a registered nurse.

What are your plans after graduation?

I have accepted a position at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, where I will be working in the Open Heart ICU/Recovery Unit. I am excited to begin my nursing career, continue building my critical care knowledge and skills, and learn from the experienced nurses around me. Down the road, I hope to return to school to pursue my long-term goal of becoming a CRNA.

I am incredibly grateful for everyone who helped me along the way, especially my family, friends, classmates, and faculty. Their encouragement and support made this journey possible. I'm beyond excited to begin my nursing career and look forward to seeing where this profession will take me.
