Doctor of Nursing Practice - Nurse Anesthetist Application Information

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

• Degree of Bachelor of Science or a graduate degree in Nursing from a nationally accredited nursing program at a regionally accredited institution within the United States of America.

• Minimum nursing GPA of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

• Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on all college work attempted.

• Minimum of 1-year post-orientation, and preferably 2-3 years of current, full-time critical care experience.

  • Employment in telemetry, cardiac catheterization lab, operating room, post-anesthesia care unit, interventional radiology, or emergency department is not considered critical care experience

• American Heart Association certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required prior to beginning clinical activities.

• Current, unrestricted RN license. (Licensure in West Virginia will be required during the program and possibly one or more of the following states: Maryland, Ohio, and/or Pennsylvania.)

• Shadowing a CRNA prior to applying to the program is strongly recommended.

• Competitive applicants will be invited for an on-campus interview.

• Transfer students must provide a letter of good standing from the Nursing program in which currently enrolled or left incomplete.

Program applicants who have graduated from a college or university who utilize a Pass/Fail grading system, as denoted on the official transcript, will be assigned a 3.0 Nursing and 3.0 Overall GPA

Students must satisfactorily complete background checks and drug screens upon admission. New program applicants with a positive drug screen will be ineligible for admission to the program and will forfeit their admission “seat.” Please see the Drug and Alcohol Screening Policy and the Health Information and Credential Documentation Policy.

Note: Students who have been dismissed from any nursing program (WVU or otherwise) may be considered for readmission if the dismissal was academic and was followed by successful completion of an additional degree. Any student who has withdrawn from the WVU School of Nursing program may be considered for readmission. Students may apply for readmission in accordance with the following guidelines and criteria but must follow the standard admission procedures. Students must meet all original admission requirements.

Once you have reviewed the qualifications and tuition information, you can begin the application process. To get started you'll first need to create an account. Once you have done so, click "Start Application" and review your admission type prior to completing enrollment information.

1. On the Enrollment Information section, please choose the following:

   • Type of Student: Professional

   • Intended Program: Nurse Anesthesia

2. On the Supplemental Materials screen, you will upload the following:

   • Current curriculum vita or resume

   • Professional goals statement. View the guidelines on writing the statement.

3. Applicants must also provide three letters of recommendation (Professor/Faculty Member, Supervisor/Employer responsible for your annual performance review, and a professional colleague, physician or CRNA). You will list your references, with their email addresses, on the Recommendations screen. Your references will receive an email from WVU Graduate Admissions with an electronic form. They will also need to upload a letter of recommendation.

Request Official Transcripts from All Colleges and Universities Attended

Request an official transcript of records from each college or university attended. It is preferred that official transcripts be sent via an online, secure service such as eScrip-Safe, National Student Clearinghouse, or Parchment to graduateadmissions@mail.wvu.edu. Alternatively, sealed, untampered, physical official transcripts can be sent to WVU Graduate Admissions, 1 Waterfront Place, PO Box 6009, Morgantown, WV 26506.

Current or former WVU students do not need to have transcripts sent from the Morgantown, Beckley, or Keyser campuses.

Applicants who completed prior education outside of the U.S. must have their transcripts evaluated by World Education Services (WES). Please request a “course-by-course” International Credential Advantage Package (ICAP).

Acceptance

Competitive applicants will be invited for an interview. Applicants will not be admitted without an interview. Admission into any graduate program is granted on a competitive basis and students meeting minimum requirements may be denied admission based on such factors as program capacity or academic discretion.

Clinical rotations with approved preceptors in the final year of your program must be arranged with course faculty. Due to potential preceptor limitations, students may have to travel out of their local areas to their clinical sites and are required to provide their own reliable transportation.

Appeal of an Admission Decision

In programs with limited capacity and competitive admissions, the most qualified students are selected among those that meet the minimum requirements.

If an application for admission into a graduate program is denied, the applicant may request the reasons for refusal of admission by writing to the specific graduate program coordinator (see Academics page). Note that meeting the minimum requirements for admission into a graduate program does not ensure admission. An applicant may appeal to the graduate program coordinator for reconsideration if the applicant can document either factual errors in processing the application or that the decision was arbitrary, capricious, or discriminatory in nature. Appeals must be submitted within 30 calendar days of the date of the admission denial. If the matter is not resolved satisfactorily within 30 calendar days of the receipt of the appeal by the graduate program coordinator, the applicant may appeal to the dean of the college or school. The decision of the dean, as the provost’s designee, shall be rendered within 20 calendar days of the receipt of the appeal and is final. Please see Graduate Admission Denial.
