Licensed Practical Nurse to Bachelor of Science Application Information

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

  • Completed a board-approved, accredited practical nursing program

  • Hold an active, unencumbered LPN license

  • Taken the ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam and earned a total score of at least 60%

  • A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all college-level work attempted if applicable

  • Complete all steps below for application

Applicants with a GPA of below 2.5 may be considered for provisional admission on a case-by-case basis. Consideration for provisional admission may include the number of seats available in the program and the number of hours completed in previous degree programs.

Once admitted, students must maintain a Nursing GPA of at least 3.0. Students who do not maintain a Nursing GPA of at least 3.0 will be placed on academic notice and issued a formal Student Success Plan. Students who do not participate in the requirements outlined in the Student Success Plan will be at risk for being dismissed from the school. Students admitted to the program must successfully pass a background check, urine drug screen, and physical exam/immunizations review by their healthcare provider; complete Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)/confidentiality and American Heart Association Basic Life Support trainings; and maintain current health insurance.

Note: Students who have been dismissed from any nursing program (WVU or otherwise) are ineligible for admission to any of the WVU BSN programs; however, students who have received degrees or additional credentialing post-academic dismissal from a nursing program are eligible for admission to the BS/BA to RN, RN to BSN, or graduate programs provided that they meet all other admission requirements and based on space available. Students who have withdrawn from the WVU SON may be considered for readmission and may apply in accordance with guidelines and criteria found in the undergraduate handbook.

Apply to WVU

Acceptance is limited, with admission offered on a rolling basis to qualified applicants. Those applying earliest will be given preference until spaces are filled for each fall cohort.

Once you have reviewed the qualifications and tuition information, you can begin the application process. After creating an account, click "Start Application" and review your admission type prior to completing enrollment information

  1. Select Potomac State College at Keyser Campus.

  2. For type of student, please choose Health Sciences Transfer, Internal Applicant (if already a student in the WVU system), or Second Degree, whichever is applicable to you.

  3. Select your international status.

  4. Select Nursing LPN to BSN and start term

  5. Answer the application questions and upload proof of an active, unencumbered LPN license (Nursys License Verification Report).

  6. Submit to WVU an official transcript showing completion of a board-approved, accredited practical nursing program.

  7. Only if applicable: Submit to WVU transcripts of all college/university level work, with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all college-level work attempted.

  8. Submit to WVU an official ATI transcript for the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) exam indicating a total score of at least 60%. If you have not taken the TEAS exam, register on the ATI TEAS website and select “ATI Remote Proctor – Nursing.” To enroll in a free, online program to help you prepare for the TEAS exam, please contact the Mineral County Technical Center: Adult Education Department at 304-788-4209. When you have completed the TEAS exam, remember to request an official ATI TEAS transcript to be sent to WVU; you do this directly via your ATI account (see “Send Transcript”).

Applications must be submitted electronically using the Application for Undergraduate Admission above. Official college transcripts from each college or university attended must be sent directly from the institution to the WVU Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 6009, Morgantown, WV 26506 or via an online, secure service such as eScrip-Safe, National Student Clearinghouse, or Parchment to wvuadmissions@mail.wvu.edu. Current or former WVU students do not need to have transcripts sent from the Morgantown, Beckley, or Keyser campuses. The application and all supporting materials must be received by the deadline for admission.

Acceptance

Applicants admitted to the program are notified by e-mail at the time of admission. Specific information, including licensure requirements, HIPAA training, advisor, review of requirements to maintain good standing in the program, and date for confirmation of seat in the program will be outlined in the acceptance letter.

In programs with limited capacity and competitive admissions, the most qualified students are selected among those that meet the minimum requirements. Students who want to appeal the Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Committee decision as unfair, arbitrary, or capricious may contact the Director of Admissions and Enrollment. The request will be forwarded to the committee for consideration, and the student will receive detailed information regarding the formal appeal process.

Orientation

All students accepted for admission to the program must attend a nursing program orientation session. Students will receive information about the orientation and other requirements in a welcome letter sent via the student’s MIX e-mail, usually in late July.
