Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing Application Information

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

  • Diploma or associate's degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.5 on all college-level work ever attempted. Cumulative GPAs of 2.0-2.49 may be considered for provisional admission.

  • Unrestricted license to practice nursing

  • Completion of WVU’s General Education Foundation (GEF) requirements. These can be completed while enrolled in the program - required GEF’s for this program include - ENGL 101, ENGL 102, STAT 211, (if not already taken). The University waives the GEF requirements for those with a previous bachelor's degree, Associate of Arts degree, or Associate of Science degree, but the student is still required to complete nursing general education requirements. Advisors will work with students to identify courses already appearing on the transcript that meet GEF requirements and develop a plan to fulfill any remaining requirements.

    • All registered nurses will transfer 50 hours of undifferentiated nursing credit based on Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.

    • General education credits may be fulfilled by course work from associate degrees or other college work completed at regionally accredited colleges or universities. See the Office of University Registrar for more information about course equivalence.

    • The last consecutive 30 enrolled credits must be taken with WVU in order to meet residency requirements for graduation. Residency is defined as: "being registered for officially approved coursework which will satisfy graduation requirements." It does not require that you reside physically in the state of West Virginia, or that you take courses in-person at WVU. The RN to BSN program is 100% online.

Applicants with a GPA of below 2.5 may be considered for provisional admission on a case-by-case basis. Consideration for provisional admission may include the number of seats available in the program and the number of hours completed in previous degree programs.

Once admitted, students must maintain a nursing GPA of at least 2.5. Students who do not maintain a nursing GPA of at least 2.5 will be placed on academic notice and issued a formal Student Success Plan. Students who do not participate in the requirements outlined in the Student Success Plan will be at risk for being dismissed from the school. Nursing GPAs can be obtained from the Director of Admissions and Enrollment. See the undergraduate handbook for further details regarding admission, progression, and graduation policies.

Note: Students who have been dismissed from any nursing program (WVU or otherwise) are ineligible for admission to any of the WVU BSN programs; however, students who have received degrees or additional credentialing post-academic dismissal from a nursing program are eligible for admission to the BS/BA to RN, RN to BSN, or graduate programs provided that they meet all other admission requirements and based on space available. Students who have withdrawn from the WVU SON may be considered for readmission and may apply in accordance with guidelines and criteria found in the undergraduate handbook.

In compliance with the Washington State Nursing Commission regulations, WVU cannot accept students who are residents of Washington into our online Nursing programs at this time.

Apply to WVU

Once you have reviewed the qualifications and tuition information, you can begin the application process. After creating an account, click "Start Application" and review your admission type prior to completing enrollment information. You will complete your application under the WVU at Morgantown Campus. For type of student, please choose Health Sciences Transfer.

Applications must be submitted electronically using the Application for Undergraduate Admission above. Nonrefundable application fee must also be paid. Official college transcripts from each college or university attended must be sent directly from the institution to the WVU Office of Admissions, P.O. Box 6009, Morgantown WV 26506. or via an online, secure service such as eScrip-Safe, National Student Clearinghouse, or Parchment to wvuadmissions@mail.wvu.edu.

Current or former WVU students do not need to have transcripts sent from the Morgantown, Beckley, or Keyser campuses. The application and all supporting materials must be received by the deadline for admission.

Acceptance

Applicants accepted to the program can expect to receive a letter from the Dean of the School of Nursing welcoming them to the program. Specific information including licensure requirement, HIPAA training, advisor, review of requirements to maintain good standing in the program and date for confirmation of seat in the program will be outlined in the acceptance letter.

In programs with limited capacity and competitive admissions, the most qualified students are selected among those that meet the minimum requirements. Students who want to appeal the Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Committee decision as unfair, arbitrary, or capricious may contact the Director of Undergraduate Programs. The request will be forwarded to the committee for consideration, and the student will receive detailed information regarding the formal appeal process.

Orientation

Accepted students will receive a welcome letter from the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and the Program Coordinator. This letter will provide an orientation to the online program providing information on the following: progression planning, email access, course registration, textbook purchases, course access, required computer skills, website resources, contact information for course faculty and instructions for online registration.
