KEYSER, W. Va. — The WVU School of Nursing Keyser Campus hosted its Fall 2024 Pledge Ceremony on Oct. 8 at the Church McKee Arts Center for sophomore students who are officially entering the study of nursing.
The nursing pledge is a commitment to demonstrate and respect the moral principles of the nursing profession. Specifically, the WVU School of Nursing Pledge speaks to integrity, compassion, ethics, patient advocacy and lifelong learning.
“To me the nursing pledge means that, as a whole, we as nurses will have the same commitment, drive, and passion to help those who can’t help themselves or need help improving their health issues,” said Keyara Heatwole, a sophomore participant in the ceremony. “As nurses, we have a common moral to uphold to do right by our patients and their families.”
For Elizabeth Pryor, the pledge means “taking upon the responsibility and control of my learning and career to promote and provide the best possible care for those in need.” Pryor added, “The nursing pledge is a light in the dark, giving a guide for all future nurses to follow.”
Olivia Barnes shared, “The nursing pledge means to me what Florence Nightingale means to nursing. It means commitment, dedication, and the importance of helping others through hard times in their lives. For all those who say the nursing pledge, we are bound together to give the best care and most empathy, and to promote health and put the patients first at all times.”
