High School Students Application Information

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants will be required to meet all WVU admission requirements in addition to program-specific admission criteria.

Direct Admissions

Priority application deadline is December 1st for the Morgantown campus.

Direct admission is based on a combination of cumulative high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores, plus Math SAT or ACT scores. Please note, there is limited capacity for the number of secured seats. Secured acceptance into the program is based on the date of which the academic deposit is submitted until capacity is reached. Once capacity is reached, qualified applicants will be placed on a waitlist and placed in the Pre-Nursing major. If seats become available, the next qualified applicant on the waitlist will be given a Direct Admit seat.

To be admitted directly to the program as an incoming freshman, a student must have:

*Note: The TEAS exam must be taken within 12 months prior to or immediately following application submission, and only the first 2 TEAS exam attempts will be eligible for consideration.

Pre-Nursing Admissions

The priority application deadline for admission to the pre-nursing major is December 1st.

Pre-Nursing majors may apply to become nursing majors after one semester of college level work. Admission is based on a combination of cumulative high school GPA and ACT or SAT scores, plus Math SAT or ACT scores. Students with a high school GPA less than a 3.2 will be admitted to WVU to Health and Well-being.

If a student does not meet the nursing admission criteria to be directly admitted as a freshman or if direct admission is not available, the student can apply for admission to Pre-Nursing.

High school students not eligible for direct admission but wishing to enter with pre-nursing status will need to have the following requirements:

Test optional applicants who meet the minimum GPA and high school core course requirements will be admitted into Pre-Nursing and are required to complete an ALEKS exam for math/science placement. Students will receive communication on next steps and how to enroll in ALEKS through the University.

*Note: The TEAS exam must be taken within 12 months prior to or immediately following application submission, and only the first 2 TEAS exam attempts will be eligible for consideration. Students that have submitted test-optional applications will be placed in CAHS until eligible test results have been received.

Potomac State (Keyser Campus) students have different General Nursing (Pre-BSN nursing) requirements. Please refer to the Potomac State catalog for criteria.

Students admitted to the program must successfully pass a background check, urine drug screen, and physical exam/immunizations review by their healthcare provider; complete Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)/confidentiality and American Heart Association Basic Life Support trainings; and maintain current health insurance.

Note: Students who have been dismissed from any nursing program (WVU or otherwise) will not be readmitted or considered for admission to the program. Students who have withdrawn from the WVU SON may be considered for readmission and may apply in accordance with guidelines and criteria found in the undergraduate handbook.

Apply to the School of Nursing

The application period for the upcoming Fall term, and Spring term (Morgantown campus only) opens on November 1 and closes on January 15.

Applications are only available during the periods specified.

Once you have completed your first semester of classes and reviewed the qualifications, you can begin the application process. After signing up, you will then receive an email with a link to set your password to start the application.

Students currently in high school, that have a TASC/GED and students that have not attended a college or university after graduating from high school should select a student type of Freshman on the application. The direct admission program occurs for the fall semester until the freshmen class is filled. Applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid admission deferment.

Acceptance

Applicants are notified of admissions decisions via email in March for those starting in the fall semester and spring semester. Morgantown students who are selected for the last 16 seats in the fall semester will be required to take courses during the first summer in the program (summer contract). This is different from the Accelerated BSN (ABSN) program. The purpose of the summer contract is to balance class and clinical group sizes to personalize and optimize the availability of learning experiences.

In programs with limited capacity and competitive admissions, the most qualified students are selected among those that meet the minimum requirements. Students who want to appeal the Undergraduate or Graduate Admissions Committee decision as unfair, arbitrary, or capricious may contact the Director of Admissions and Enrollment. The request will be forwarded to the committee for consideration, and the student will receive detailed information regarding the formal appeal process.
