Meet Cadence.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
I wanted to be hands-on with patient care. I am a big people person so nursing helped me help others.
Did you have an ah-ha moment about wanting to become a nurse?
When I learned about how hands-on the job is, I knew that this was the dream future career for me.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
I wanted a school that was in-state, close to home and had a small campus. WVU has a strong community which makes it more appealing. The people at WVU Potomac State College will go above and beyond for you if you prove you are dedicated. The help that the faculty will give you is beyond what I have seen at other schools.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
Walking across the stage at the White Coat Ceremony. It made everything surreal. It is such a big deal to us sophomores. We worked hard to get into the program and continue to work hard to achieve our goals.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
Focus on your grade, goals, and self.
What has been the biggest challenge nursing has presented you, thus far?
Time management was a challenge for me. Being a nursing student is tough, but Dr. April Shapiro and the entire nursing staff have made so many resources available to us that it has made a huge difference in our success.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I hope to work in a NICU for a few years and then go back to school to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. After I have worked for many many years I hope to retire from hospital care and hopefully teach my knowledge to future nurses.
Where/who do you draw your inspiration from?
My mom always pushed me to work hard. She put her dreams on hold to raise her kids. I appreciate everything she has done for us.
Why would you recommend WVU SON to someone?
The teachers will help you every step of the way. The faculty will lift you up and help you achieve your goals. Reaching out is easy as well.
