Meet Jonathan.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
My grandmother and mom were both involved in the healthcare field. From a young age, I would hear their stories and what they did, and it sounded fun. Then I also am a type 1 diabetic, and the nursing care I received in the hospital inspired me to become a nurse. Another reason is the diversity of a nursing degree. There are so many options for things you can do, and that intrigued me when I looked more into the program.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
The Beckley Campus is right next to my hometown. This gave me access to a great school, and I was able to save money since it was close to home. Looking over the benefits of the WVU SON, a 4-year degree was a great option for me. I want to pursue a higher degree in nursing, and the BSN will definitely help me with applying for schools. Plus, the Beckley Campus has a high passing rate for the NCLEX-RN, as well as a good track record with its students finding jobs after graduation.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
One positive experience I have had with the SON is the supporting staff. Many professors within the program helped me. Whether it came to studying for an exam or needing someone to talk to, they were there for me. They always looked out for the students in every way they could.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
I would tell myself not to be so scared to ask for help. Transitioning from high school to college was rough, I will say. And some of the material was harder to grasp than others, but if I had been more out there and even asked my friends for help in the beginning, it would have helped a lot.
Are there any obstacles you’ve been able to overcome in your pursuit of a nursing degree?
One obstacle I overcame is my anxiety towards patients and being comfortable taking care of them. Being a nurse is a big responsibility, and I would get a little nervous to graduate and be an independent nurse. I have overcome this fear by seeing the amazing support that the team of nurses I work with and have clinical around have. This helps to show me that nursing is not an independent effort, yet a team effort for the patient.
What do you hope to do after graduation?
I hope to get a job in a step-down unit. This will help to combine the med-surg acuity with ICU acuity as well in an intermediate state. I think this will help me with time management and organization. I would like to work in an ICU after a year of that.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw my inspiration from my little sisters. They help me want to be a better person every day, and I try to set a good example for them. They make me laugh when I get home from class or clinicals, and seeing them learn new stuff is amazing. I want to show them that they can do anything they set their mind to.
Why would you recommend WVU SON to someone?
I recommend this school because of the great support it offers. Also, the tinier class sizes at the Beckley Campus help to give you a more one-on-one experience with the professors, so it is easier to clarify things after the lecture.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I would say if you want to be a nurse, do it. There are so many great opportunities for nurses. You do not have to be a bedside nurse if you do not want to. Look into how many different careers a nursing degree can offer for you.
