Meet Matthew.
What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
Both of my parents work in healthcare and growing up I would hear them talk about their days and the impact they had on their patients. Listening to those stories inspired me to pursue a career where I could make a similar difference in people’s lives.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
For me, WVU School of Nursing was an easy choice. The direct admission program was a huge advantage, and the consistently high first-time NCLEX pass rates spoke to the strength of the program. It gave me confidence that I would be well prepared for my career.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
One experience that stands out to me happened during clinical. I was caring for a patient who had been doing well, and when their family returned the next day and saw how much they had improved, they took the time to thank me personally. Seeing their relief and gratitude was incredibly rewarding and reinforced why I chose nursing.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
I would tell my freshman self to enjoy every moment. It may sound cliché, but my time at WVU has been truly special. I’ve built lasting friendships and made unforgettable memories. Even during stressful times, it’s important to appreciate the experience because it goes by quickly.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to work in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit here at Ruby Memorial Hospital.
How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?
WVU has thoroughly prepared me for this next chapter by helping me develop resilience, a strong work ethic, and compassion. The program has instilled values that I will carry with me into my nursing practice and use to provide the highest quality care to my patients.
Anything else you’d like to add?
If you’re considering WVU, I encourage you to visit campus at least once. The sense of community and hometown feel is something you must experience for yourself. It’s a place that truly makes you feel at home.
