Meet Kelsey.

What made you consider nursing as a program of study?
As I grew up, my grandfather always told me that the medical field was the best career option. The older I got, I realized that I not only wanted to follow the advice my grandfather gave me, but I had a passion to make a change in someone’s life. Health is wealth, and nurses are on the frontlines of healthcare. I want to become a nurse because I’m deeply driven to provide not just the best care, but also comfort, compassion, and hope to those going through some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Being able to make even the smallest difference in someone’s healing journey is what truly inspires me.
Why did you choose WVU School of Nursing?
WVU School of Nursing has a highly respected BSN program, and I knew that I wanted to receive a top-notch education. I chose the WVU Tech (Beckley) Campus because I wanted a small knit community where I could get to know my peers and professors while building strong relationships through this journey.
Could you share a positive experience from your time at the SON?
I have had so many positive experiences while in this nursing program, but one that sticks out to me particularly was when we helped at a community healthcare in Wellsprings during my junior year. We gave flu vaccinations, checked vital signs and sugars, and gave out food for those in need. This event helped me see the impact nurses can make on the community and was a great place for my peers and I to make an impact on someone’s life.
What’s one piece of advice you would give your freshman self?
You CAN do it! There will be hard days—late nights studying, tough exams, and emotional moments—but it’s all part of becoming the nurse you’ve always wanted to be. Don’t be afraid to lean on others, take care of yourself, and keep your head held high!
What are your plans after graduation?
I plan on returning to Huntington, WV to be closer to my family and work within Marshall Healthcare, most likely at St. Mary’s Medical Center.
How do you feel WVU prepared you for your next chapter?
With graduation right around the corner, I feel more prepared every day to be a nurse. My professors have made an incredible impact on not only my knowledge but also my heart. My professors have been excellent examples of how to be a good nurse and show your patients that you truly care for their well-being.
